How to Grow Winter Aconite Bulbs in Ireland

Plant Eranthis hyemalis in autumn for very early blooms from February to March. These hardy little bulbs are perfect for naturalising in semi-shaded areas, such as beneath deciduous trees or in informal lawns. They're especially valuable in Irish gardens for their ability to flower during the coldest months.

  • Planting Depth: 5 cm deep

  • Spacing: 5–10 cm apart

  • Soil: Moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil

  • Sunlight: Partial shade or full sun while trees are bare

  • Blooming Time: February

  • Height: 10 cm

  • Growing Tip: Soak in water for 6–12 hours before planting. Plant in drifts for a natural look and allow foliage to die back fully to feed the tuber.

Winter Aconite is an excellent bee-friendly plant, offering very early nectar and pollen to pollinators emerging on mild late-winter days - often before crocuses begin to bloom.
